Welcome to Whitesville!

I found this rather interesting image on a soda can, recently. The soda appears to be from France or, I assume, some other French speaking area and so may be the racial stereotype that it evokes isn’t as relevant there (where ever ‘there’ is). But it does add to the mystic of this find that I bought it in one of the whitest areas I have been – Naples, Florida. My partner and I are vacationing with her family down in the area and that part is really nice. But it’s a cultural shift to come from likes of Berkeley, California to an area like South Florida. So, it begs the question, is it purely coincidence that one can find such imagery in an area such as this?

Embedded Giving

If you’re like me you’re too broke to buy anything for anybody this holiday season. But none-the-less, I just read an interesting article on the phenomena of charitable giving through commercial purchases. An idea that has its merits but one that also raises a lot of concerns. For me it boiled down to this statement:

“We have people call and say they want to do this or that to benefit the foundation all the time, and we turn them down because we know what they want is to leverage your name,” Ms. Federman said.

Suffocation

Yes, while I was taking in the Third Coast Audio Festival this year I missed one of my favorite bands. And in recognition of that I thought I’d post a video that found on YouTube. It’s funny to see them do a video as they really, REALLY aren’t a “video” type of band. Anyway, enjoy…

Dr.C! @ TCIAF (day 1) & Other Ghoul News

This year Halloween is bittersweet for me. Bitter because I don’t get to celebrate the best holiday of the year; it’s sweet because I am attending the Third Coast International Audio Festival (TCIAF) in Chicago, IL. TCIAF is three or so days of nothing but audio workshops, sessions, screenings, discussions and parties. It’s my first time going and I’m really excited! I’m hoping to learn some good skills for constructing stronger audio pieces and I’m also hoping that I’ll be able to build my contact base. You want some icing to go with that? Well here you go:

The week before coming here I was forwarded a message that a certain radio program was looking for people to pitch ideas for audio pieces that address HIV/AIDS and women (especially women of color and other marginalized communities). The catch was that I had to write this pitch, my first ever I should say, in less than 24 hours. Granted, this fit my SisterLove project to a “T” and so I really didn’t have to do more than outline much of the work I have already completed. So, I did complete the pitch and spent the next couple of days doubting myself. Turns out the producers looking for stories loved my work and hired me to complete an 8 minute segment for their 29 minute program. Awesome! My very first paid radio gig! It was quite a confidence boost and just in time for me to come out to Chicago and rub shoulders with some of the top audio producers in the world…shweeeeeet. I’ll post who hired me and when the show airs once all is completed.

Here are a couple of photos of the airline workers enjoying Halloween. The flight crew was so friendly and funny it was scary. May be everyday should be Halloween.

Sign Spinning: Part 2

The other day I made some implied statements here (derogatory at best) about the job of sign spinning. While I’m not back tracking on my feelings about me doing it, I do want to say that I can see some fun in it and this guy has some good points. But doing this “forever”? That’s a bit exaggerated in my opinion…but my props go out to Marcus. You definitely make it look fun :-)

What a day to BBQ!

In my opinion, any day is a good day to BBQ! But it’s especially nice when you have a whole 10 pound salmon, a couple of butternut squashes, some fresh corn, beer, and a few friends to help you digest it all. Check out a few more photos here.

Have a Career in Documentary!

I am a recent graduate of Social Documentation from UC Santa Cruz. I am looking for work…and looking…and looking…and…Anyway, yes it sucks! What is it that a “documentarian” does? Well, I think I have found the answer!

Earn $10/hr holding signs directing buyers to new home developments, with bonuses awarded for dependability and top performance. Need energy and enthusiasm, and be able to stand outdoors in all weather, moving the sign

Yes, a career of sign spinning! That’s me! Sign Spinner extraordinare……frustration sets in…deep.

UC Regents are "dysfunctional…"

A University of California Regent recently said that his institution has a “dysfunctional set of organizational structures, processes and policies.” Wow, I couldn’t agree with him more. The problem is that this is the type of stuff that trickles down throughout the system. I would argue that many of the programs and colleges on UC campuses that I’ve been on show the same signs. Anyway, it’s good to see someone from the inside take a public stand…I only wish some of the faculty and such would organize to challenge the way things are. But then I guess once you are dependent on a job you pay more attention to the political repercussions than anything else. I can’t say I blame them but it sure sucks being a student who takes out massive loans only to be at the whim of such “leadership” and receive less than expected in educational delivery.
