Audio Tips & Techniques

I came across some useful links this morning that cover portable audio recorders, field production, head-worn microphones and a profile of a field, sound engineer. The articles are part of the B&H Email Newsletter, essentially a way for the trusty ol’ New York based professional equipment outlet to reach its customers. The obvious commercial motive aside, I found the articles insightful in that they clearly show some different professional configurations of equipment with simple explanations, pictures and price lists. Check it out:

Head-Worn Microphones – Up Close and Personal
(I found this one helpful because I’m looking for a way to mic my self during interviews which allows me to remain able to monitor my recorder as well as hand-hold mic my interviewee).

Bay Area Audio Events (August)

A couple of interesting audio-centric events are coming to the San Francisco Bay Area during the first week of August. The first is an evening event on August 1, called “Soundwave Series 3: Aural Sensations”.

“An all sensory experience your body and mind you will not soon forget. Nebraskas sonic alchemist Jay Kreimer creates an audio spectacle with audience-triggered motion sensor sounds. Walter Funk orchestrates 3-D holographic images controlled, sound sculptures and human movements. Jay Kreimer will discuss and demo audience-interactive motion sensor technology follow performances.”

The second event also starts on August 1, but runs through the 9th. It appears to be a play about a group of eccentrics who put on an old-style science fiction radio show:

“Penny Dreadful Theatricals presents… Kelly McCubbin’s Golden Age of Radio. What year is this? Local cult performer, Kelly McCubbin, seems unsure as he and his group of drunks, misfits and malcontents try to put on a live Science Fiction Radio Show.
From the creator of “Uke-y Stardust” and “Purple Rain – When Ukes Cry” comes this loving and hysterical tribute to Golden Age Radio, but with a modern edge. Chaos, comedy, music and an entire, brand new, science fiction radio drama will overtake the Exit Theatre for 2 weekends in August.

Beware the Cognizance Reaction!!!”

See you there!

Audio Featured on Vocalo.org

I just learned that some of the audio I captured with my fiancee’s Iraqi family, currently living in Jordan, has been featured on one of the programs at www.vocalo.org. The audio is a clip from my interview with my fiancee’s 78-year old aunt. In case you missed that blog entry, she is a retired school teacher who was displaced, under penalty of death, by U.S. Marines from her home in Baghdad. This clip describes what she used to like to do in Iraq and what she does now as a refugee in Jordan.

The clip is featured in the program “Midday Mash-Up” and the direct link is: http://www.vocalo.org/on-air/playlist/30151 . You will be able to listen to the archived version shortly (if not already). Be sure to vote on it!

Update: It looks like the audio clip is actually featured on several Vocalo.org playlists…cool!

New "Blogcast" Posted!

A quick note to say that I just posted my second installment of the “Imagine 2050″ audio blog. This month I interview a Syrian woman, born in Lebanon and raised in South Carolina. A very complex and interesting mix of cultures going on and she was not only perfect for the 2050 project but gracious enough to sit down for an interview.

Click HERE for the July 2008 program.
Cheers!

Fried Traveler…reports…

I only have a few minutes left on my 1 hour of Internet time so I will simply say, I’m ready to come home. Here’s a shot from the streets of Alexandria. Like Cairo, people walk amongst the cars like they are made of steel. So, we’re scheduled to fly back home tomorrow after our mid-east trip. We started in Jordan, went to Cairo, then to Alexandria, then back to Cairo, then to Luxor, then to Aswan via a boat down the Nile and then we flew back to Cairo this afternoon. Three solid weeks of non-stop traveling has burned this humble traveler out. See ya’all soon…many more photos and audio to come. Visit www.imagine2050.net for my scheduled Blogcast coming by mid-July.

Egypt: Day 10 "Big ol’ Photo Recap"

Our four days in Cairo were booked solid so I’ve been unable to post anything for the past few days. Well, that and the fact that the hotel we were in charges $30US for twenty-four hours of Internet use. Total highway robbery (IMHO). So, the hotel we are at now in Alexandria only charges $20US for one day of use. Phew, at least someone out in the world isn’t trying to rip off customers -sarcasm-. You’d think $10+ for a beer and may be $10 for Internet use would line their pockets well enough. Se la vie…I’m going to do mainly a photo recap of the last few days as I want to get out exploring Alexandria since we are going to ditch the tour today :-)

Cairo from the hotel room balcony…

The Nile from the hotel room balcony…

Shot from the tour bus on our way to view pyramids…

We will leave our ancestors a globe full of waste while the we ponder the past…

The Lonely Planet guide quotes a person saying that viewing the Sphinx is kind of like seeing your favorite Hollywood actor in person: “Wow, they’re a lot smaller than I imagined”….

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali. No boxing jokes/puns please…

More Cairo skyline from the Mosque of Ali…

Wow! You remember these things? I thought soda companies eliminated pull tabs back in the 1980s…

From the bus we passed a paddy wagon. It was at least 100 degrees outside…

A group of young Muslim women wave and smile as we pass…

Seems like every hotel we stay at is in repair…

I’ll be posting some new audio soon…

Peace!

Noah

p.s. Any Americans nervous about visiting this part of the world shouldn’t be. Sure our leaders have really fucked up our image but the majority of people you will encounter on the ground here are smarter than the angry, anti-American image our leaders want us to believe. No surprise here. Think “Matrix”…It’s an illusion to keep you in your place and to keep you from realizing that we are ALL getting screwed. Fight the power!
