Egypt: Day X – "Alexandria"

I’ve completely lost track of what day it is. My time in Cairo has be fun but a little hectic but I chalk that up to the price for being part of a tour group. We just left the ‘poshness’ of the Conrad hotel in Cairo and now we are at the Palestine hotel in Alexandria. It’s a gorgeous place – right on the Mediterranean Sea – but the hotel is a couple of knocks down on the quality pole. Anyway, it seems a bit more sane here in terms of the number of people and we will have more free time to ourselves. So, I hope to get out on my own now. I have more audio and lots more photos that I will post tomorrow…must sleep…Zzzzzzzzz…

p.s. I look forward to getting back home for nothing more than being able to go into a bathroom and not have someone standing over you waiting to, uhhh, wipe your…okay, so I exaggerate but it feels pretty darn close to that here.

hey flor, the food has been good. a bit repetitive but i think that has more to do with the eating habits of the people i’m with. lots of hummus, tomato and cucumber salad, lamb, chicken and beef kabob, yogurt ‘dips’, pita, etc…we made a stop along our way to Alexandria at a large truck stop style eatery yesterday. seeing food come out of the kitchen things looked very ‘American’ and on the menu was ‘Hamburger’ and ‘Cheese Burger’. Susie and I decided to split a hamburger but our order turned out to be 3 patties and nothing else. tastey but not what we expected. the language barrier is difficult here. you can point at a menu item and for some reason the person taking the order will act as if he/she doesn’t know what you are talking about until you attempt explanation. And even then you often don’t get what you ordered. I still think they have a more western burger at that place (they had a version of pizza there). In the end, though, the foods we’ve eaten have all been spiced nicely and prepared well…
